Why Choose Cycle Right with Active Ireland?
- Accessible to All: Thanks to funding from the Department of Transport, local councils, and partner organisations, this training is highly affordable. Funding covers one class group per school year, or a shared class in the case of two years, ensuring every school can participate. The goal is for this to become an annual programme, giving all students the chance to take part during their primary years.
- Comprehensive Training:
- Bicycle Maintenance – Learn to check your bike and set it up for safe riding.
- Helmet Safety – Ensure the correct fit for ultimate protection.
- Cycling Gear – What works and what doesn’t.
- Weather Awareness – How to prepare for different conditions.
- Core Bike-Handling Skills – Build control and balance.
- Shoulder Checking & Signalling – Stay safe by staying aware.
- Starting, Stopping & Positioning – Navigate safely and confidently.
- Turning & Group Riding – Learn how to ride in groups and take safe turns.
- Road Simulation – Practice real-world cycling scenarios in a controlled environment.
What Happens During the Course?
This 8-hour programme is delivered over 6 weeks, with sessions lasting 1 hour and 20 minutes. Each week builds on the last, ensuring students have time to practice, progress, and master new skills.
Using traffic simulations, practical drills, and fun games, students will learn to handle their bikes safely, improve awareness, and ride confidently.
On the Final Week:
Where possible, students will take part in an on-road session, putting their skills to the test in a real-world environment under the guidance of our expert trainers.
At the end of the course, each trainee will receive a Cycle Right certificate, celebrating their achievement and recognising their new skills.
What’s Our Goal?
Our aim is simple:
- To teach children how to cycle safely while building their confidence and awareness.
- To inspire a love of cycling as a fun and healthy activity.
- To encourage sustainable transport habits that will benefit communities for years to come.
